Chapter 1
Uyi stood aghast as he surveyed the situation before him. He looked at his wife as she sat on the floor in the corner as her head collapsed over her chest and her arms drooped onto the floor beside her. He could see she was in so much pain but was simply too weak to shed any tears. His eyes moved back to the bed where the body of the child lay lifeless consumed by the hunger that had plagued the land relentlessly.

Some neighbours had begun to gather but even they seemed unperturbed by the situation. It had gradually become the norm to helplessly watch loved ones as the life drained from them while the famine continued to ravage every square inch of the land.

The rice fields which had been the staple of existence were now bare and scraggly, as even the husks from the last harvest nearly a year ago had been scavenged to oblivion as the villagers had desperately sought to stave off the creeping spectre of the famine.
